My grandfather, Walter James Harris was Town Beadle and Crier for Whitstable from 1920 until 1934, when he died.
He had a dog called Major, who often went with him when he had to make public announcements, prefaced by ringing his bell! He had many duties, leading the carnival parade, making the announcements at the Horse Show and keeping an eye on the beaches at Whitstable and Tankerton.
I have many fond memories of him, as I, as a young grand daughter spent a lot of time with him. I would like to obtain a copy of the Whitstable Times for May 19th 1934, as I believe that it contains his obituary and funeral report. He died aged 54, his widow, Clara, lived until she was 101. |

If a letter came into your possesion that was originally written to the Oyster Company in Whitstable warning them not to remove the shingle from their beach you might well assume that it had been written recently.
In this case your assumption would have been 182 years out and once you had read the name of the signatary, Thomas Foord, then you would know that you had a document which said much about Whitstable history all those years ago.
First a look at a scan of this letter: |
